Description
FindBrightStar explicitly uses Util.Prefs.GEMFLipXxxbound to decide where to look for a bright star. If the mount reports its pier side, these values are not the right ones to use!

I can't think of a way around this except to document the need to set the flip points in ACP even if the mount reports its pointing state. The flip points are only used to make sure the search area is on the same side of the pier, so errors are "soft". There's still a benefit of having the hardware flip/pointing state info.
