See this Comm Center thread by Andre Ioda and Per Frejvall. Periodically, stop observing and take a series of short exposures on a bright star and measure the FWHM carefully, then average to get a clean FWHM. Use this to estimate sky quality. Of course the delay is the issue. How quickly will the sky condition change? But as Andre points out, it would seeminglyu be better than manually setting it!
